JOHN BANNON WORKSHOP

It’s been said that all you need to perform card magic is a pass, a palm, and a top-change. That may have been good advice a century ago, but modern card magic requires a different mindset … and skillset. Let’s investigate a modern mindset in which construction is as important as sleights, and where how you think about a trick can make a real difference. Let’s take advantage of a broader, but easier skillset.

During the Workshop, we’ll look at a wide range of tricks whose common thread is that they use a regular deck. Most are impromptu. Also discuss how certain tricks were put together and what tradeoffs were involved. John will also answer all questions, help with the few moves required by modern card magic, and talk about any topic or trick requested.

As long as time permits, John may cover the following tricks:

Montinator 5.0
This trick illustrates the role of “packet tricks” in card magic and the desirability of ending examinable. Techniques to accomplish examinability. We will discuss the Elmsley count, and demonstrate in depth the Bullet Party count.

Cannonade
Expedience versus practicality and the tradeoffs to make the expedient more practical. In addressing a quick, streamlined Ace production, we’ll apply Occam’s Razor for tradeoffs and simplicity. You may end up with a better trick.

Directed Verdict
Iconic Ace production put together over many years. I always do this trick for civilians.

Doctored Daley
Presentation and how it can make a trick play completely differently. Messing with a classic.

Plot Twist
Another classic trick. Presentation makes it different. A final sequence that clearly says “the end.”

Origami Poker
Well-disguised mathematical principles. Identifying the key points of the trick.

Origami Poker Redux
Streamlined, but self-working variation.

Heart Of Glass
The power of discrepancies and why they work. Ace of Spades changes places with the Queen of Hearts

‘Cross-Eyed Jacks
False pretext and the Twist Switch in this squeaky clean transposition.

Rendezvous
What is the Mystery card effect? Is there a place for whimsy and clowning?

Sly Dog
Playing the mistake and the “magician in trouble” device. Why it generally should be avoided. A universal, default presentation strategy.

Question Zero
Demonstrating a psychic superpower: Mind-reading. Minimizing presentation in very direct effects.

On the Border
Another psychic superpower: predicting the future. Things should be as simple as possible, no simpler. Contingencies: when they are good, when they are not so good.

Four-Shadow Aces
The Ace Assembly. Good trick? One at a time or all at once? Timing. Developing the presentation.

Three Part Harmony
The narrative. Not exactly adventures of the props, but not exactly not. Presentational judo.

During the workshop, lecture, and just hanging around the convention, John will be available to talk about any questions you may have (he kinda’ likes talking about card tricks).
